The flock just got a little bigger, a little louder, and a lot shinier. Please welcome our newest Cayugas: Brooke and Lily.
If you're not familiar with the breed, Cayugas are the ones that look like they got dipped in an oil slick and came out looking incredible for it — that deep beetle-green sheen isn't a filter, it's just how they show up to work every day. They're a heritage breed with real conservation value, which is a fancy way of saying we have an excuse for how quickly this happened.
So who are they?
Brooke and Lily are settling into the routine fast — figuring out the pecking order, testing the boundaries of the run, and generally reminding the rest of the flock that new ducks in town do not, in fact, ask permission.
We'll have more on their personalities as they come out of their shells (so to speak) over the next few weeks. For now, they're eating well, exploring confidently, and doing an excellent job of being extremely photogenic.
Why it matters
Every new bird we bring in is part of the bigger picture here — building out a genetically healthy, well-documented heritage breeding program, not just growing the headcount for fun (though the fun is a nice bonus). Cayugas are exactly the kind of breed worth keeping around, and we're glad to be doing our small part.
